Our History
As a PhD student and a recently qualified lawyer, husband and wife Peter and Linda Hanley took the risk of their lives when they started Five Tuition with no business training in 2011. Responding to local parents who felt concerned that their children were being limited by gaps in the local school system, Five’s first campus at Derrimut was established to provide affordable, after-school tutoring where students could receive the personalised attention they needed. With campuses in Derrimut, Point Cook and Caroline Springs, Five Tuition has become an essential service for many families across Melbourne’s rapidly growing western suburbs.
Driving Five’s success is a team of some of the state’s brightest young talents. After completing VCE with scores that placed them within the top 10% of the state, Five’s tutors are keen to pass on their knowledge to students who like them, went to school in Melbourne’s west. Rather than working a standard job, Five’s tutors want to make a difference in the world.

In 2020, Peter and Linda presented the baton to Anselm Paul and Lisa Lim, a couple from Singapore who have made Melbourne’s West their home. Anselm and Lisa have four girls of their own attending schools in the community. With their qualifications in education and hearts for young people, Peter and Linda felt that Anselm and Lisa were well-placed to continue the mission and vision of Five going forward. Five aims to be a part of the local community, providing an additional layer of support and helping students to be successful at school and in their future careers.
We truly believe in Five’s ability to transform Melbourne’s West through the power of education. We genuinely believe that bettering the education of the youngest members of the community in Melbourne’s West will result in generational changes for them and their families going forward.
Peter & Linda Hanley - Founders of Five and Directors from 2011 to 2019
“We started Five in 2011 as a family business, seeking to help students learn and thrive at school. We believe that learning happens most naturally and effectively when someone you respect sits humbly beside you, helps you, speaks honestly to you, and has hope for you. Everything we do at Five aims to facilitate that learning process. It sounds simple, but learning is simple. It doesn’t require complex programs, a detailed curriculum or the latest technology; as helpful as they might be. Learning simply requires someone with the competence to teach, the character to model, and the commitment to pass on their knowledge. Teaching isn’t the exclusive domain of professional teachers either. It’s also the responsibility of parents, peers and the local community, who are highly influential in a student’s life.”
