After three years of active tutoring, Yashna recently said farewell to Five.

Yashna completed her VCE at Suzanne Cory High School in 2017, achieving an ATAR score that placed her among the top 6% of students in Victoria. She then went on to enroll in the Bachelor of Biomedical Science Programme at Monash University.

Having coached her younger siblings, Yashna describes herself as being “extremely passionate” about tutoring. In this article, Yashna shares her tutoring experience.

Tell us why you chose to tutor at Five.

After graduating from high school, I knew that I wanted an opportunity to pass on the knowledge and skills I had acquired throughout my schooling to other students. Five Tuition stood out for me because of its impact-focused and student-centered approach. As classes consist of no more than five students, I found I could truly build relationships with my students and be more than just a tutor to them. Not to mention, I love how lively and colourful the campus is!

Do you have a memorable tutoring experience to share?

My most memorable tutoring experience was with a particular student whom I tutored in VCE Further Mathematics. In the beginning, this student struggled to score well on tests. They also seemed to also get anxious easily. Because Further Maths was one of my favourite subjects at school, I offered plenty of tips and tricks to help them score well and eventually achieve the study score they had aimed for. Once they finished their exams, they were so happy that they bought me a present - just to say thank you!

Which one of Five’s five values resonates strongest with you - Humility, Helpfulness, Honesty, Hope or Honour?

Helpfulness is the value that resonates strongest with me. The reason I wanted to be a tutor in the first place was to not only teach content but to also be a role model to my students. I wanted to be their friend and confidant as I know how difficult school can be not just academically but socially and emotionally as well. I love giving advice and I want my students to have the information I wish I had when I was their position.

How has working as a Tutor at Five developed you?

Working as a tutor at Five Tuition has definitely been a character-building experience for me. It has taught me the importance of being resilient and patient in both personal and professional contexts. As one of my first jobs, tutoring has also strongly developed my communication skills and leadership capabilities.

What advice do you have for students and young people in general?

The best advice I can give students is to enjoy the school years as much as you can! Study hard but also get involved within your school community and don’t be afraid to make mistakes.

What’s next for you?

I am very excited to begin a Masters in Medical Ultrasound Programme and am aiming to become a Sonographer. I hope to continue helping people and making a difference in their lives.

I will definitely miss my amazing team at Five Tuition!

On behalf of parents, students and all of us at Five Tuition, we thank Yashna for her dedication and wish her the very best in all her future endeavours.
